summer tips for the well-dressed man

Summer tips for the well-dressed man

At Salt Sky we love a well-dressed man. Here are some general guidelines to hot weather dressing that we feel will help keep you looking sharp.

Wear light colored clothing. Fabrics made with natural fibers like linen and cotton are the best choice because they are breathable weaves. Dark colors as you know don’t reflect light, they absorb it, making you feel hotter.

The summer t-shirt. If you are going to wear a t-shirt, make sure it is 100% cotton and not see through. Loose fitting t-shirts will allow for airflow but remember to not wear too loose of a shirt and especially not too tight. Go for the middle and stay safe and classy. Note: a sharp dressed man chooses a polo shirt before a t-shirt when possible.

The polo shirt. While still casual, this shirt is a step up from the t-shirt and a favorite for a weekend out on the town. With this shirt you can choose some stripes and patterns. Polo shirts are seldom fitted but would look so much better if they were. Consider a visit to your local tailor. Even a slight alteration can make a huge difference.

The button down short sleeve shirt. Love these! You just can’t go wrong, now the question is… to tuck or not to tuck? You can look stylish either way but a shirt that is too long will make you look like a slob. Rule of thumb: if you are covering more than 50% of your back side, the shirt is too long. This is a simple alteration that doesn’t cost much.

The undershirt. Always wear a light weight undershirt, preferably with a V-shape neck. You may think this will make you feel warmer but it will absorb moisture and keep your shirts free from sweat stains. A sharp-dressed man simply wears one because it just looks nicer.

Shorts. The nicest look are shorts that are 2-3 inches above the knee. Anything shorter looks like you are on your way to the gym. Choose linen when possible.  However, some shorts made with synthetic blends have a nice cut, which do look classy. Stay away from denim as the weave is too tight making them too warm for hot summer days.

Shoes. There are 3 types of shoes that look great with shorts. A nice sandal, boat shoes and a canvas sneaker. Never running shoes, unless you’re exercising that is.

Have a happy summer, you well-dressed man!

These watercolor paintings are so beautiful and will add a personal touch to your home. I’m excited to have all my little ones painted so I can display them in my hallway.

Our favorite shoes... all about Sole Society on the Salt Sky blog

if the shoe fits…strut

“Money can’t buy happiness, but it can buy fabulous shoes and that can lift one’s ‘sole’.”

Shoes complete an outfit. I love shoes even though I have the hardest time finding my size. I wear a size 5 which is nearly impossible to find in most stores. Have you  ever shopped online at Sole Society? Not only are their shoes absolutely gorgeous, they carry my size. I love the many styles and the quality of their shoes, made with real leather. They have flats to high heels and everything in between. Here are a few of my favorites…

Wedges are my all time favorite. They are way more comfortable than a pump, although pumps are beautiful, wedges are my go to shoes.

Sole Society wedges

Flats are always comfortable. Ever since I had my first baby, I have found that I can’t lug around my diaper bag and son with 4 inch heels on. Well, I could but not gracefully. So I decided that heels were for date nights and times I have my husband around to help carry all my stuff. You can find really great flats that can make your outfit super cute. I really like these shoes because of their shape and I love the stripes. If you aren’t into pattern, they have solid colors as well.

sole society flats

Boots. Every girl needs to own a pair of boots. Or one in every color perhaps?  I love these particular boots because they can be worn in the warmer months too.

Pumps. Pumps are so much fun! For a night out on the town. These pumps are so much fun because of the details. These shoes also come in a cobalt blue if you are looking to spice things up.

Why you should visit Venice

I can appreciate lovely things and I’ve seen many places with unique qualities, however nothing could have prepared me for Venice.  Venice feels like another world, some whimsical place that could only exist in books.  Gondolas floating down the canals, flowers hanging from the windows, angels carved onto palaces…need I say more?  Few things have ever brought me to tears and this place is one of them.  Here is a list of reasons I think you should make Venice a priority in the future.

1. It’s romantic.  This place is so fun to explore with the one you love.  My husband and I wished we had more than two days to walk around and eat gelato and take pictures.  If you haven’t seen the movie The Tourist then you need to! It’s funny and romantic and action packed and takes place in, you guessed it, Venice.

2.  It’s sinking.  Oh no! This wonderland is unfortunately deteriorating under the effects of rising ocean water.  Although the government hired engineers to mend the problem with the MOSE Project it is no guarantee that this place will stay lovely and magical forever.  How can you enjoy Venice with water up to your ankles?

3.  It’s historic.  San Marco Square is lined with historic buildings that, with small entrance fees, provide fascinating stories about the development of Venice.  In the palace there are rooms so intricately painted, you’ll definitely need to take a picture, but watch out, the workers will pounce on you the moment they see a flash!

4.  The food.  Venetians sure know how to cook.  Being close to the ocean means fresh fish of all kinds.  Try something new and I promise you won’t be disappointed.  That is unless you don’t like seafood.  If that’s the case then they have pizza too. 😉

5.  The boat rides.  This alone should be a reason to go.  Gondola rides can be expensive but they are so worth it.  Gondola rides provide a more intimate tour of Venice.  You float down canals that you wouldn’t be able to see on foot that are lined with brightly painted buildings and mossy walls.  It’s quiet and peaceful and lets you appreciate the city in a whole new way.

Although I’m biased and think Venice is a dream come true, I hope that wherever you go you have fun. Take lots of pictures.  If you’ve been to Venice let me know what you liked about it.  Ciao!

a little compromise

James A. Cullimore once said: “I suppose there is no surer need in marriage than constant compromise. It is through compromise that we grow closer to each other. As we acknowledge our own faults and recognize the virtues in the other and make the adjustments, we strengthen our marriage.”

This quote made me think of a time when my husband made a big compromise for me.

My husband loves to camp and had visions of happy camping trips with his family. He once bought a tent trailer. It was beautiful. He stocked it well with all that was needed for a fun weekend and packed us all up to go camping. We went to a lake surrounded by gorgeous pine trees. I took our dutch-ovens and we cooked a great meal. The children had a nice time canoeing and doing archery. It all sounds lovely but it quickly became a disaster.

That night, a huge drunken fight broke out in the camp next to us, the children were horrified, and we feared for our lives as we heard gunshots before it was broken up. No one slept much that night. The morning after, some very unfriendly women came to our camp and accused us of stealing their firewood. And due to my extreme phobia of reptiles, camping has never been on my favorite list anyway. Needless to say, it didn’t go well, but we have some memories to laugh at.

I think we took the tent-trailer out another time or two.

Several years later, I got a strange phone call. The man at the other end of the line said “Are you the wife that won’t camp?” Turns out that my husband had placed an ad in the newspaper to sell the trailer. The ad read: “Tent trailer for sale, wife won’t camp.”

I’m not sure how I got so lucky. It seems to me that my husband has had to compromise so much more than I have in our marriage. I am deeply grateful and I love him for it. I realize I need to work harder.

This week, join me in taking a closer look at the relationships that mean the world to see where we can make an adjustment, maybe compromise a little, to bring more happiness to the people we love most.

For Kicks & Giggles

Who you gonna call?

Two summers ago our cat died. Frodo Baggins was part of our family for about 12 years. In that time we never saw a rat, but from time to time we did see some mice that were usually left on the door mat by Frodo as a gift. Frodo was a remarkable pet, somehow it had a sixth sense that kicked in when someone in the family wasn’t well, the cat would lay on the bed of the sick person and it could not be moved.   We buried it in the backyard after a small ceremony that included extended family bringing flowers and a prayer given by Eliza. We were all crying except the men.

This past year we saw an infestation of very large rats around our property. We live near the mountains and there is a stream that runs through our property; somehow they found us. Our sons-in-law came to the rescue with their pellet guns. They wore spelunking LED lights on their heads and taped flashlights at the end of their guns too. I think they enjoyed the evening hunt a little too much. In a matter of months, they had killed approximately 60 rats measuring up to 6 inches long (not including the tail).

Because we have a dog and little children around, we did not want to put out poison. So about a month ago we decided to call in the experts as the rats had staged a coup.

These two little fur balls now live in our shed. We chose black kitties for their protection since there are hawks and owls around the neighborhood.

They have a heated bed and their very own couch. Plenty to eat and lots of love from the children around here.

Much to our surprise, there hasn’t been a single rat sighting anywhere near our property in a month.

Consider 6 reasons why getting a cat is a good idea:

They’re great hunters.

They’re independent.

Yet super cuddly.

They bathe themselves.

No need to house break them.

They’re entertaining.

At Salt Sky we think cats are simply purr-fect!

Some of you are tea lovers, some aren’t so familiar with it, and some just aren’t sure what to think. Tea comes in all different varieties; Black, White, Green, Pu’erh, Yerba Mate, Herbal and Fruit to name some of the most popular kinds. Herbal, Yerba Mate and Fruit are not made with tea leaves and so they don’t have caffeine in them. Black, White, Green and Pu’erh do have caffeine and come in different strengths depending on the oxidation. SO why tell you all this? Just in case you had the thought, ‘I don’t drink tea,’ when you started reading.

Tea has some incredibly healthy qualities and according to the Harvard Men’s Health watch, “Tea contains substances linked to lower risk for heart disease, cancer and diabetes.”  Time magazine also did a recent article on the benefits of tea including: boost in exercise endurance, reduces the risk of heart attack, hydrating to the body, protects against a large amount of cancers, good for your waistline and aids in prevention and treatment of neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s. Maybe it’s time to put down the Diet Coke and start chugging tea!

Tearamisu, read about them on

Tearamisu by The Emperors Tea is the only place in Utah of its kind and owned by M.C Rivetti and Jason Woodland.  You can find 106 tea varieties to take home, 50 to order off the menu and they make a total of 227 types of tea, packaged beautifully.

What makes them so special?  They grow their own tea and it is 100% organic, which I learned is pretty impressive as most organic growers are only required to be about 70% organic and still call themselves organic.  At Tearamisu, you can find organic loose leaf tea by the cup, pot or 2 oz. bag to take home.  They also serve the super popular Boba teas!

There are tea blends like Flu Buster, Detox, Calma when you need to relax before bed and Nitro Boost when you need some extra energy to get up and going in the morning.

Tearamisu serves not only tea but fruit smoothies, drinks and desserts such as cannolis, tiramisu, pizzele, torta di ricotta (Italian cheesecake) and biscotti. Everything is just heavenly and homemade daily at Tearamisu. Fun fact, the tiramisu takes 24 hours to make, it’s a must try.

Tearamisu1Tearamisu is a social place as well. They hold events often and they have 3 private tea rooms that you can sit in when you come. You can get together with your book club, bring friends for a relaxing treat, hold business meetings or find some quiet time in their Zen room.

Tearamisu is a friendly place where you will feel right at home.

I think you should definitely pay Tearamisu a visit soon.  We’re so in love with it, you’ll probably find our Salt Sky team having a meeting in one of their comfortable rooms!

And what would a Salt Sky Review be without a sweet deal to try out a new, fun place… well, Tearamisu is giving away a 2 oz. bag of tea and a bottle of their awesome Kyroaid, a unique, powerful and long lasting pain relieving gel for sore muscles.  Read all about Kyroaid here.  Enter to win on our Instagram and Facebook pages.  ALSO, show this coupon for 50% off any pot or cup of tea!

“Therefore, let us serve one another with brotherly love, never tiring of the demands upon us, being patient and persevering and generous.” Ezra Taft Benson
Inspiration, Stories

a life touched for good

Today I was thinking about a woman who once touched my life in such a way that to this day, I remember the details of her kind face. I will never forget her. On this particular day, I was recovering from surgery, tired, in some pain and a little down. Other than my family, no one really knew how I was feeling.

But somehow this lovely woman who lived by me had found out. She took the time to make a big bowl of caramel popcorn for our family. She rang my door bell and said: “I am so sorry you haven’t been well, I wanted to do something for you today, and I knew your two little girls would enjoy this.”

Tears filled my eyes, it was hard for me to find the words to express to her how much that meant to me. You see, she was in her late forties, she had a beautiful family, her children were in high school, her husband adored her, but she had just few weeks left to live. She was weak from all her cancer treatments and wore a scarf on her head to cover where her beautiful hair had once been.

I knew how much physical effort making this popcorn must have taken, when she should have been resting.   But until the end of her life, she was actively looking for ways to serve. She left a legacy of service to her family, to all who knew her, and to me. I cherish it to this day.

We don’t just serve when it’s convenient or easy. We serve as this faithful friend did, even when it is most difficult. Why? Because service helps us to get to know God.

“How knoweth a man the master whom he has not served?  Mosiah 5:13

I am certain that my friend knew her Savior when she met Him.

Ezra Taft Benson said:  “Therefore, let us serve one another with brotherly love, never tiring of the demands upon us, being patient and persevering and generous.”

I hope this week as we go about our many activities, we will take the time to find ways to serve others. That we can touch a life for good and in so doing can get to know God even more.

Try to be a little more careful, courteous and kind as we share the road this summer.

Keep calm and pedal on

Several people in our family enjoy road biking for health and fitness. Although I can’t say that any of the gals at Salt Sky are very happy about it.  We worry about our men on the roads. So far no one has been injured but I do have 3 friends that have been seriously hurt in the past few years. All three required surgery and faced hospitalization and a difficult recovery.

The warm weather has arrived and so have the number of bikes and stretchy pants on the road. We want to encourage all our readers to promote positive interaction between drivers and bicyclists.

During the month of May and June, the Utah Highway Patrol, Zero Fatalities and Bike Utah, among other organizations, will host the annual Road Respect Tour.

“The Road Respect Tour carries the message from southern to northern Utah as a core group of 30 Road Respect Riders and a small contingency of classic Cobra cars travel Utah’s roads. They ride to encourage bicycling, demonstrate obedience to the law, show proper car/bicycling etiquette, support local tourism, and create conversation. As Road Respect Riders move from town to town the public is invited to participate in community rides for all ages and abilities, and Road Respect Events with fun activities. Many of the Road Respect events feature mini car shows to attract automobile enthusiasts and encourage interaction between drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians.”

Please go to to learn more.

Here are four basic bicycling tips that will help keep you safe:

  • Maintain control of your bicycle.
  • Protect yourself–reduce the risk of head injury by always wearing a helmet.
  • Be visible, alert, and communicate your intentions.
  • Ride with traffic.

I hope we can all try to be a little more careful, courteous and kind as we share the road this summer.

When I was almost done with college at the University of Utah, I was expecting our first baby. I was pretty excited for a little one to join my husband and I and so I would often stop on my way home from school at Foothill Village to visit Babinskis. It was the kind of place I always dreamed of shopping for baby things and I fell in love with its charm and everything inside.  I had to buy something new for baby every time I stopped by.

Babinskis baby, review, coupons & giveaway found on

Babinskis has 2 locations. Salt Lake City (Foothill Village) and Sandy. They opened in 1997 bringing a new and unique store for babies and toddlers. Babinskis carries beautiful furniture, bedding, car seats, strollers, toys, clothing and so many accessories. Their furniture is beautiful and so well made. I have one of their cribs that has lasted through all of my children and still looks as good as the day we bought it.

I also love that you can go in and pick out chairs and gliders and have them custom made in a variety of fabrics. If you want a nursery that’s going to wow, fit your personal style and be a relaxing place for you and baby… then you’ll fall in love with Babinskis.

If you ever wonder when you look at Pinterest, where you could find that unique gift or baby accessory, well, it’s probably at Babinskis. I also think their toys are so awesome. They are the timeless ones that you remember from childhood, others that you saw while traveling in Europe, classic soft and cuddly toys and backpacks that I haven’t found anywhere else. I just love Babinskis’ unique style and get lost browsing the store when I visit.

Whether you’re searching for yourself, a great shower gift, or baby’s birthday party, you’ll find some special things at Babinskis. My kids are in love with their Aden + Anias blanket and I had no idea that they made crib sheets.  I just discovered them when I went to Babinskis last week.

We laugh that when I brought home one of my babies from the hospital, she was wrapped in an Aden + Anias blanket, my mom asked why on earth I wrapped her in a dish towel. We had to explain that not only were these the most awesome and popular blankets out there, but that the little prince, Prince George, came home wrapped in one of these blankets in Kate Middleton’s arms. They’re anything but dish towels.

Do you have any of these blankets, and if so, how much do you love them?  Well, who out there wants one? Owner of Babinskis, Daphne Hansen, is giving away a pack of Aiden Wraps!
