Favorite fall fashions

Fall is my all time favorite time of year. I get to pull out all the sweaters and boots, enjoy the crisp air and changing leaves. What’s not to love?  I wanted to share with you some of my favorite must haves for the cooler fall weather.

Boots of course!

I just got myself a pair of booties from Just Fab and what’s nice about them is that I got my first pair for only $10! Who doesn’t love that deal?

Plaid Anything

Plaid dress

Plaid scarf

Plaid gloves

Okay I know plaid has been around, well, forever and it’s nothing new but it’s new to my wardrobe. I’m loving this look and can’t wait to start wearing plaid!

Colored Pants

Brown pants

These are from H&M. Buy these here

Burgandy pants

Black pants

These are from H&M. Buy these here

I love colored pants. I was at H&M last week and my mom found some absolutely adorable brown pants and I may have to copy her. For fall try going for darker colors like this brown, or burgandy. I personally love black pants but if you are wanting a little more go with an option like these!

Sweaters

I used to be all about tighter clothing but after having two kids I realized that the tight fitted look just wasn’t the most flattering on me. I am loving sweaters that are a little looser. Not oversized but something that still shows that you have a shape to your body.

Scarves

Scarf

Scarf

Yes. Scarves. They are the best invention ever. Scarves make outfits look so cute and it’s fun to get patterns in the mix!

Hats

Hat

I usually don’t wear hats but I have seen a couple that I am loving lately and I may just have to purchase!

Jewelry

Layered neckace

We all know that jewelry finishes an outfit so don’t forget to put some on. Especially simple layered necklaces. I bought this one at Forever 21 and I think it’s so cute!

Bring on Autumn! I wish it lasted all year! Xoxo

Tyler Robinson Foundation

The Tyler Robinson Foundation (TRF) was started by family members of Tyler Robinson and members of the band Imagine Dragons.  TRF was created to
“strengthen families financially and emotionally as they cope with the tragedy of a pediatric cancer diagnosis by providing hope, information, and relief through financial services, caring volunteers, and monetary grants.”

At 16-years-old, Tyler was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare form of cancer. Tyler had a positive and amazing outlook on life. After a long battle with cancer, Tyler was declared cancer free, however, Tyler’s cancer returned unexpectedly and a few months later he passed away.

During Tylers’ cancer battle, he grew close to the band Imagine Dragons. Tyler loved music and one of his favorite lyrics during the time he was battling cancer comes from the song “It’s Time,” which says The road to heaven runs through miles of clouded hell. When the band heard about this, they dedicated the song to him at a show – this was the beginning of a long friendship.

TRF set out to raise money this month for pediatric cancer patients.  They rode from Canada to Mexico, calling their project CanCo. They stopped at 10 families along the way surprising each of them with $10,000 each!

Media said that $100,000 was not enough to move people, not enough of a good story. What do YOU think?  For more information and to donate to a cause that affects so many of us, click here.

At Salt Sky we are extremely excited to be partnering with The TRF Foundation and these incredible and inspiring people. Stay tuned for a great event coming up in March, updates and information to come!

We love you TRF and Imagine Dragons for all the good you are doing and we are so excited to be joining you.

"It's up to me" Inspiration story
Inspiration, Stories

it’s up to me

You know how sometimes you need something in your life and somehow it comes to you just at the right moment?

This past week I took a beautiful morning walk with my dear friend Liz Gibbs. As we walked, she told me of a statement by Johann Goethe that through the years has become her mantra.

I couldn’t wait to get home and read it, it reads:

“I have come to the frightening conclusion that I am

the decisive element.

It is my personal approach that creates the climate.

It is my daily mood that makes the weather.

I possess tremendous power to make life miserable or joyous.

I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration,

I can humiliate or humor,

hurt or heal.

In all situations, it is my response

that decides whether a crisis is escalated or de-escalated,

and a person is humanized or de-humanized.

If we treat people as they are, we make them worse.

If we treat people as they ought to be,

we help them become what they are capable of becoming.”

Years ago as Liz was hiking she stopped and asked, “WHY ME?”  Why am I so blessed? Why do I live in such a beautiful place? Why do I have so much joy in my life?

Liz is one of those people who can lift and serve and spread love wherever she goes. She notices everything and loves a cold cloudy rainy day as much as she loves a sunny one. It’s no wonder her mantra are words she truly lives by – it shows in the way she approaches life and treats others.

One thing is sure, problems arise, life gets hard and at time challenges overpower the good.  But if we understand that our attitude is everything, then we can move forward with more strength to face the day.

This week, I will make an effort to memorize Goeth’s powerful words and learn to better apply them in my everyday life. I hope you’ll join me.

Fall Decor
Thanksgiving

Easy fall decorations

Fall is such a beautiful time of year! As Miss Congeniality would put it, “all you need is a light sweater.”  I love walking outside and feeling the cool air and seeing the colorful leaves on the trees. You can bring that beauty to your porch and inside your home in a simple and cost friendly way.

Fall Decor!

Dried sticks from trees are the perfect piece to create a base to your decor.  Just grab the prettiest branches and make a wreath in a flower pot or a fountain simply by sticking them into the dirt, all going the same direction.  Once you have done that, you can get some fall berries and fall leaves at a home decor store such as JoAnn’sTai Pan, Hobby Lobby, or TjMaxx.  You don’t need much I only purchased 2 branches of fall leaves and 2 fall berries.

You can’t go wrong with fresh potted mums, they are beautiful fall flowers and easy to find. You can get them at your local grocery store, Whole Foods has 2 for $10. Or for big ones, visit  The Home Depot. Plant them outside or indoors.  Mums like to stay moist so don’t forget to water them daily.

Add succulents, a tall grass and a couple pumpkins.  This pot cost $15 to put together.  With summer plants loosing color and needing to be pulled out, this is a great way to move your entry to fall while still feeling fresh, alive and colorful.

Fall berries!

I love my mantel, and it took only about 15 minutes to put together.  I found a big branch outside placed the entire thing across the mantel.  Added clipped smaller branches  and a berry garland.  Lay the garland first and stick the branches evenly through the entire garland. The cost was about $25.

When you are shopping for supplies check online or local newspaper to see if there are any coupons, I am always getting great deals when I do that.

Happy Decorating!

Be still, do not fear. Inspiration post

Be still, Do not Fear

Sometimes things come up in our lives that seem too big, too hard, too overwhelming. Are you fighting a battle that seems too large?

This week I was reading and found another one of those intriguing stories of the great kings of the Bible. It is the story of King Jehoshaphat of Judah who faced a time when several armies were approaching his lands in all directions in an attempt to take them.

You can imagine how scary this must have been for him and his people. So the king gathered everyone and asked them if they could hold a fast and plead with the Lord for help. “All Judah stood before the Lord, with their little ones, their wives and their children.” (2 Chr. 20:13)

And they prayed.

Then king Jehoshaphat also turned to God in prayer and said “O our God, we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon thee.” (2 Chr. 20:12)

His humble prayer was answered by the words that the prophet Jahaziel spoke to him: “Thus saith the Lord unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God’s… Stand ye still and see the salvation of the Lord with you, fear not, nor be dismayed; tomorrow go out against them: for the Lord will be with you.” (2 Chr. 20:15, 17)

The next day the people rose early in the morning and went out to face their fate. The king gathered them once more and stood before them to reassure and inspire them. He told them “Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe in the Lord your God, so shall ye be established…so shall ye prosper.” (2 Chr. 20:20)

The Lord did as he had promised and protected the people. They saw all the armies that had come to destroy them fighting among themselves. Fighting so fiercely in fact, that they destroyed one another and never reached King Jehoshaphat or his people.

Sometimes we forget that the great battles in our lives don’t need to be fought alone. Alone is . . . well . . . lonely, harder, and so exhausting. When we turn to God and lay all our burdens at His feet, we are able to move forward with more faith and greater hope.

This week, I hope we can all trust a little more, even when the situation seems impossibly hard. He is always there.

Celebrating Chile on saltskyutah.com

Chile

Fun fact… Did you know that we’re half Chilean? Yup, that’s where our mommy dearest is from, she moved to the U.S. at the age of 12. Since today is September 18, Chilean Independence Day, this is for you Chile.

11223643_432815336903976_5685031825743465871_n

In a nutshell:  After the Spanish invasion of Chile, in order to take advantage of all their natural resources, Chileans grouped together and rose up to take their country back from the European Royalists. The insurrection eventually broke out into a full on civil war. Chile succeeded giving us the celebration of the Dieciocho (18th).

It has been said that when God had created the world he took everything that was left over and threw it over the Andes Mountains, thus creating Chile. Chile is incredibly beautiful from its deserts in the North where some places have no recorded rainfall to its snow capped islands and glaciers in the South. In between you’ll find everything else from beaches to volcanoes to beautiful forests, lakes and great rivers, and people you instantly fall in love with.

Despite our mother’s best attempts, we may not be the best Spanish speakers she could have ever imagined.  Growing up we often made fun of our mom and her ways. We look back on all the times we told our friends that we couldn’t have a sleepover because our mom was Chilean and she didn’t allow it, but now that we have children we understand her better. She still stresses out if our babies don’t have shoes on because their tiny feet may get cold (no worries that it’s 98 degrees outside). She still greets every stranger she meets with a kiss on the cheek if they are from Chile. And when our kids are having a melt down, she scoops them up in her arms, sings a Chilean lullaby and they stop crying instantly.

We live very American lives, but… We know of our Chilean heritage, study it and love that part of our lineage. We love our ancestors who have taught us to work hard through their histories. We have visited, met family and miss all of them. We have incredible grandparents who have sacrificed so much for us and often remind us of our Chilean culture. We love our family, we love our heritage and we love our Chile.

We send our love to the many that are suffering because of the recent earthquake, we are all praying for you. We can’t wait to visit you again soon Chile!

All our Love,

The Salt Sky Dowdle Girls, aka, Brittany Fenton, Paulina Sansom, Samantha May and Eliza Baucom.

Zucchini Chocolate Chip Muffins

This is my favorite time of year because I get to have fresh picked zucchini from my grandfather’s farm. I  wanted to make an amazing zucchini bread and I found the perfect recipe after searching for a while. Sally’s Baking Addiction has a recipe that I have fallen in love with and I want to share it with you!

The reason I like this recipe so much is that I can make it into muffins for on the go and did it has a delicious brown sugar streusel Need I say more? My little guy wanted to help me bake them and we had a blast together. Here is the recipe.

Brown Sugar Streusel

2/3 cup old fashioned oats

1/2 cup brown sugar

2 Tablespoons all purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 cup unsalted butter, cold

1 Tablespoon chocolate chips (I used Ghirardelli milk chocolate chips but you can use semi sweet)

Combine oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and flour together in a medium bowl. Cut the cold butter with a pastry cutter and combine with the oat mixture. Or do it the old fashion way like me and use your hands until they look like coarse crumbs. Add in the chocolate chips with a spoon and set aside.

Zucchini Chocolate Chip Muffins

1 large egg

1/2 cup brown sugar

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup vegetable oil

1 cup grated zucchini

2 teaspoons baking powder

2 teaspoons baking soda

2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

3/4 cup chocolate chips

Preheat the oven to 425° and spray a 12-count pan with nonstick spray.

In a medium bowl combing the beaten egg, brown sugar, granulated sugar, oil, zucchini, and vanilla until well combined.

In a large bowl combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg and chocolate chips together. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients with a spatula and combine. Don’t over mix.

Pour the batter into the muffin tin to the top. Put the streusel on the top and press down a little bit. Bake the muffins for 5 minutes at 425° and then turn down the oven to 350° and continue baking for another 12-14 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.

Muffins

These were a hit at our house and I hope they are at yours.  Now try not to eat them all in one day. Enjoy!

Noosa- a little piece of heaven

At Salt Sky we are crazy about a new unbelievably delicious yogurt we were recently introduced to by our friend Christie Blodgett. It is everything the company claims it is, thick and velvety, sweet and tart. The moment we tried this piece of heaven, we were hooked. There really isn’t a yogurt that comes close to it.

Noosa is made in small batches on a farm in Colorado. Originally started in Australia. Lucky for us all, they moved to the Rocky Mountains!

Roasted-Sweet-Potato-with-Lemon-Yogurt-6602   b99357930z.1_20140930120318_000_g8p81srk.1-0

This yogurt is all natural, gluten free, probiotic from cows never treated with rBGH. Which are genetically engineered artificial hormones injected into dairy cows to make them produce more milk.

And if you read a recent post on our site called “This Could Save Your Life” then you know how important we feel probiotics are.

noosa yoghurt     pumpkin-noosa-yogurt-02

There are so many flavors that it is hard to choose our favorite.  But make sure you try the LEMON for sure.  Fresh Market usually sells the tubs 2 for $4.00.  One tub has 2 servings.

Now go give it a try.  We promise you will be happy you did!

Amsterdam- a must see

Before my trip to Europe I was skeptical about Amsterdam.  You hear the horror stories of drugs and prostitution.  This reputation is well deserved because it was the first country to legalize prostitution and openly sell Marijuana.  However, it was the cleanest, most family friendly place I have been to.  Shocking? Let me explain.  The “scandal” is maintained within the “red light district” which is an area about 3 blocks by 3 blocks which is easily avoidable.

Amsterdam is the most diverse city in the world.  It is a place rich with different cultures and friendly faces.  I have never felt so welcomed in my life.  It’s true what they say about the bikes, there are THOUSANDS.  That is part of what makes Amsterdam so charming.  People aren’t staring at their phones and bustling around in dull routines, there is always something new going on.  There are street markets, waffle stands, flower-lined canals and museums on every corner.  There are endless activities for couples, families, and independent travelers.

DSC_0246

Don’t ever be afraid of taking children there! The streets are clean, the officers and civilians are kind, the air feels fresh and the houses are so charming.  Yes, crime happens in Amsterdam, as it does in every other city, but I have never felt safer in all my travels.

DSC_0057

Here are some things you might not know about Amsterdam:

  1. It is said that Amsterdam has more museums per capita than any other city in the world! There were museums about art, history, fashion, fishing, etc.  A family could never get bored in Amsterdam.
  2. There are more bikes than people in Amsterdam. 63% of citizens use a bike to get around.  It’s no wonder everyone looks so fit.
  3. 86% of Amsterdam residents are bilingual.  This means you’ll never have a problem with translation.  Most of the people I met spoke English.
  4. It has more canals than Venice, Italy.  This city is very similar to Venice, it is built on eleven million stilts by the ocean.
  5. The red light district is the safest part of Amsterdam.  It is heavily cleaned and monitored.  I wandered through this area for a while and marveled at the beautiful architecture and flowers.

DSC_0032

Don’t cross Amsterdam off your list! It’s beautiful and cultured and the locals welcome you with open arms.  It’s my home away from home and even though I was there for only a short time I will carry those memories with me forever.
