New Year's

New year’s eve traditions

Watch this segment live on Channel 13, THE PLACE.  Airing at 1:00 pm on Monday, December 28th.

Year in Review Dinner- We love to end the year with a nice dinner.  During the holidays we spend time with extended family and friends but on New Year’s Eve, we have a dinner with our parents and spouses.  We place a jar in the middle of the table, it’s full of little pieces of paper that everyone has written on.  They contain all sorts of things that happened during the year.  Good things, happy things like “Wesley was born.” or Sami graduated from college” And also hard thing, we turn the bad into a victory by writing something like “Eliza survived kidney stones” or “Bubba almost died of pulmonary embolism but is still here!”  We laugh, and most of the time, we also cry.  It’s a wonderful bonding time for us all and we look forward to it.

Balloon Popping- Fill some balloons with confetti (we use paper confetti, it’s easy to clean up).  With a permanent marker write the time on each balloon so that you can pop a balloon on the hour until midnight arrives.

Photo Booth- This is so much fun.  The kids really have fun with this one because they get to make props and cut up paper to create their own photo booth.  We also buy some ready-made ones.  Make sure you Instagram some pictures.

2016 Wishes- What is a new year without some goal setting?  We like to call it a wish list.  This is fun for everyone because it’s a fill in the blank sheet that you can print.  Click on it to enlarge and print it from here.

We love to decorate with silver, gold and black. These are simple ideas but fun and something you’ll enjoy doing year after year.  With all the busyness of the holidays, it’s nice to keep this party simple.

The Home

safety tips for your home during the holidays

We found some simple yet excellent advice from The SafeWise Report on how to keep your home safe this holiday season.  Here are 5 suggestions:

Keep your travel plans offline.

If you are planning to travel during the holiday season, be sure to keep your travel plans off your social media networks. Never post where you are going, when you are leaving, or when you will be back.

Notify a neighbor.

If you are planning to go out of town during the holiday season, be sure to notify a trusted neighbor. Ask the neighbor to keep an eye on your house and report any suspicious activity. You’ll also want this neighbor to keep your walks cleared of snow and to pick up your mail and newspapers while you are away. Make sure your house looks like somebody is home to deter a burglar.

Hide any Christmas gifts.

You probably want to keep gifts out of sight from children, but you also want to make sure gifts are hidden from a potential burglar as well. Try to keep your Christmas tree, with gifts underneath, away from windows or other places with a view. When you aren’t home, it’s easy to break through a window and grab all of your gifts.

Watch your Christmas lights.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, December is the deadliest month for electrical fires. Be sure to inspect the lights to make sure there aren’t any frayed cords. Also, use heavy-duty extension cords and power strips.

Inspect the furnace and the chimney.

Heating-equipment, like furnaces and fires cause many deaths every year in the United States. Change your filters often, have a professional clean out the chimney and be sure that indoor heating equipment is used properly.

The holidays can be the most wonderful time of the year, as long as you stay safe during them. Be sure to take the precautions you need in order to fully enjoy the season.

Christmas at The Grand America

Christmas at the Grand America

Located: 555 South Main Street
Salt Lake City, Utah
Event: Windows at the Grand, “Songs of the Season”
Dates: Now-December 31
Admission: FREE

One of our favorite family traditions at Christmastime is visiting The Grand America. There are beautifully decorated windows all through the hotel. This year the theme is “Songs of the Season.” Every window represents a song and you get to guess which Christmas song it is and fill in your card as you walk around.

You’ll also find a giant gingerbread house. This year the gingerbread house is a Wyoming cabin made of 1300 pounds of flour, 300 pounds of sugar, 1500 eggs, 100 pounds of chocolate and so many other exiting facts that you’ll have to learn when you visit. This Gingerbread house took 456 hours to create by some amazing chefs, and it is breathtaking!

When you get to the gingerbread house, you get a delicious cookie to enjoy. You can take Gingerbread classes, stop at JouJou; a unique and magical toy store that makes everyone feel like a kid, see all the amazingly decorated trees and listen to Christmas music.

This is a great activity as a date or for the whole family where you can enjoy an elegant Christmas and a perfect indoor activity for those cold days. We hope you love it as much as we do! If you have any questions, just leave a comment below.  Have a great time!

Christmas, Stories

Come Let us Adore HIM

AND IT CAME TO PASS, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. And all that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. . . And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen.

This week, I want to focus on a night long ago, when a mother held a tiny baby in her arms. A baby who would be the Savior of the world for all who had and will ever live. In her arms, she held hope for you and for me.

No matter how hard the road gets, that alone is reason to rejoice.

Merry Christmas!

Inspiration, Stories

when the animals spoke

Many years ago, our family spent a Christmas in the South of Chile. It was summer and we found ourselves far from home. To keep the spirit of Christmas in our hearts, we read stories each night before bed. On this particular night, we were in a little log cabin by a lake with a huge volcano as the backdrop.

The story we read that night was a favorite because it was about animals and our girls love animals. It goes something like this.

It was the night before Christmas when all the beasts came together from the furthest places of the earth to talk. The first to speak was the lion, who reminded everyone that he was the king of the beasts. He spoke of his accomplishments, his shining days when the Romans loved him and how his roar can make the whole continent tremble.

Then the elephant spoke about being the biggest beast on earth, about his size and strength that can awe nations, yet walk so softly and light that no ear can hear him coming.

The giraffe broke in and reminded all the beasts that she was the tallest and could look down on them and eat from the tops of trees and run so very fast.

The leopard interrupted to remind them all that he along with his cousin the cheetah could run even faster.

The camel who had been quiet weighed in and told the others that it was camels who had helped to built the pyramids, no one else had tackled a job that big and furthermore, he could cross scorching sands that would burn any of their feet and he could do it without any water.

Many more animals spoke.

Finally, a little gray beast who stood listening stepped forward and said “I am a donkey, I can’t run fast or go days without water. I can’t climb trees, nobody is afraid of me. Only one great thing, which I have ever done has stuck in my mind. It happened a long, long time ago. . . in the dark of night. I carried a mother who carried a King.”

This week, I hope we can all take a moment to relax with loved ones, and take the time to read the sweet stories that remind us of why the world celebrates this season.  And its true meaning.
