One of our new favorite places that recently opened is The Protein Foundry in Cottonwood Heights.  We were so excited and made sure we were one of the first ones there on opening day.

Owners Jared Brockman and Lorin Warner saw a need for a health food restaurant and created The Protein Foundry that has quickly become a loved place that customers drive from all over to visit.  Some people even visit daily… it’s like the health person’s daily Starbucks.

Protien Foundry

The Protein Foundry is a restaurant offering healthy food consisting of natural fruits, vegetables and protein. Their menu contains Gourmet Shakeouts, Acai Bowls, Greek Yogurt Bowls and Gourmet Toast.

Protein Foundry, Salt Sky review

Here’s why we love them and think you will too:

  • Shakeouts are delicious shakes in lots of flavors and contain a giant protien scoop.  You don’t like protein shakes?  You’ll fall in love with this new take on a protein shake… all the stuff that’s good for you with an incredible taste.
  • Acai Bowls are a fan favorite.  Owner, Lorin Warner learned about acai and the nutritional value while living in Brazil.  These are a must.
  • My personal favorite, Greek Yogurt Bowls and Peanut Butter Banana Monkey Bread.  Seriously, let me just say DELISH!
  • You won’t find any crazy extra ingredients in the food, just natural, giving you energy and feeling great.
  • No sugar added.
  • Awesome customer service!

It’s a must visit this week so head over and tell us what you think.  The Protein Foundry is also giving one lucky follower a $25 gift card!  To enter, visit our Instagram or Facebook.

Inspiration, Stories

goodness with sugar on top

Last week was Spring break for my grandchildren. It was a time of outings and celebrating warmer weather, so this called for a trip to the new Holladay City playground.

Afterwards, of course treats were needed and the girls walked to Great Harvest across the street. Picture three mothers pushing strollers with seven children in tote. As they came out of the bakery, a nice gentleman who had been watching them followed them out of the store. He handed them a bag full of cookies that he purchased for the children.

How do we change the world? One random act of kindness at a time.

Everyone was so touched by this man’s kind gesture that it made them want to turn around and do something nice for a total stranger.

Rumi, a 13th century Persian poet once said:

“Your acts of kindness are iridescent wings of divine love, which linger and continue to uplift others long after your sharing.”

This week, let’s all take a minute to follow the example of the nice man at the bakery. It’s sure to make someone’s day and warm your heart while at it!

You don't realize the impact your actions have on others. This is a great read!

For Kicks & Giggles

we’re celebrating earth day

This month, in celebration of Earth Day and Arbor Day we are planting a tree.

This family activity was the perfect time to talk about reasons why planting a tree is important.

We chose an apricot tree because it will give us fruit for our favorite jam. Not to mention the fun the kids will get from picking the fruit and helping with the canning.

Dan Lambe, president of the Arbor Day Foundation recently said:

“Trees are a solution to many of the global issues we face today, improving air quality and water quality and helping mitigate climate change, deforestation, poverty and hunger.”

Join us this month in planting a tree to celebrate this beautiful place we call EARTH.

4 ways to a healthier home...#1, park shoes at the door...
Health & Fitness, The Home

four ways to a healthier home

Park your shoes at the door – Did you know that C.diff and E.coli can hitch a ride on your shoes right into your home? Not to mention pesticides. Asking guests to remove their shoes is very uncomfortable for me, so when I am having a gathering, I spray my front mats heavily with an all natural cleaner that kills 99.9% of bacteria, Sol-U-Guard Botanical Concentrate Disinfectant.  Afterwards, I mop with the same cleaner, reducing whatever was dragged into the home.

Kitchen towels – When preparing food, use the kitchen towels only once and then toss into the washer. It’s the perfect place for bacteria to hide and can easily contaminate food and countertops. I like using these Super Absorbent Anti-bacterial, Streaking-free towels.

Bathroom humidity – is the ideal place for mold. Keep a close eye on this problem so that you don’t develop breathing problems. Use the fan or open a window for some fresh air. Wash bath towels often and wipe down the shower daily.

Get some indoor plants – especially a ficus. You not only will sleep better but plants absorb formaldehyde, a gas used in building materials found in every home’s walls, cabinets and furniture. Formaldehyde levels increase with increases in temperature and humidity. Symptoms include: sore throat, cough, scratchy eyes and nosebleeds. Formaldehyde is known to cause cancer. The cancer of greatest concern is cancer of the nose and throat. Yup, I think I am going to go buy me a few house plants this week!

Locals making a difference

Meet James the Mormon

Today we are starting a new series at Salt Sky called, “Locals Making a Difference.”  We are excited to start featuring people in our community that make a difference in the lives of others.  We are kicking this off with a local favorite musician, James the Mormon.

James grew up in Russia and graduated from High School in Uzbekistan, now lives right here in Utah; his mother is the United States ambassador to Russia.  He was raised religious but was truly converted to his religion, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (also called the Mormons), later in life.  He had a strong desire to serve a mission at the age of 23 and share the message of the gospel with others so that they could feel the joy that his conversion had brought into his life. James served in Washington, speaking Russian.

James the Mormon

One thing that was troublesome to him was that many members of the church were not as quick to share the gospel with members or even tell people that they were Mormon.  He didn’t understand how others wouldn’t want to tell everyone who they were and what they stood for.  When he returned home he decided that from that point on, anyone who came in contact with him would know that he was a member of the church, he changed all his social media to James the Mormon.

James began a blog writing about his experiences on his mission, encouraging others to serve and eventually helped many by talking openly about a difficult divorce.  He also felt that he needed to share the positive message of the gospel through one of his hobbies, music.  His music took off like crazy and he quickly built a following.  His youtube videos that were made, just for fun, have inspired many to do good and help others.

James the Mormon

Fans of James the Mormon come from all different backgrounds and have come to love him.  His hope is that through his music, he can spread positive, clean music that coincides with his values and through his following, he may help others become familiar with the gospel and his testimony of Jesus Christ.

Yesterday, James released his album, I’m not a Rapper.  His collaborations with other talented artists leave this album sounding both unique and an anticipation of the next track.  It’s not hard to see why his voice is loved.   What do you think?  Click here to listen, purchase the album or leave a comment, James the Mormon wants to hear from you.

James the Mormon

We hope you find much success, James, and admire your commitment to standing up for your beliefs and using your talents to spread a positive message.
Do you know someone making a difference in your community?  We want to hear it and share them!  Email your nominations to, subject: Locals Making a Difference.
