Our Favorite Fall Soup

Nothing says autumn more than Butternut Squash Soup!

This is our favorite recipe and so easy to make. We love baking Crusty Bread to serve with it. Our grandpa who we call “abuelo” grows plenty of butternut squash every year and shares it with the whole family.

Here’s what you’ll need:

One butternut squash, peeled and cubed

One small apple, peeled and cubed

2 TBSP Knorr Caldo de Pollo

Put the above three ingredients in a pot. Cover with water, just enough to barely cover and cook until tender when pricked with a fork.

In a separate pot:

Melt 1 cube of butter

Add 2 TBSP flour

¾ cup half & half cream

Cook on medium heat until it thickens, mixing constantly.

In a blender:

Blend the cooked squash & apple along with the water it cooked in.

Pour into the cream mixture. Add a little pepper and ½ tsp. of nutmeg.

We like to sprinkle a little nutmeg when serving each bowl too.

5 Tips for Booking a Holiday Flight

We are excited to introduce you to a new friend, Emily Holt, who shares some seriously awesome deals on flights from Salt Lake City to all over the world.  Check out her guest post today about holiday flights and see our Instagram today, @ SaltSkyUtah to enter to win a $50.00 Alaska Airlines Card along with $25 gift card to Target to buy all your travel treats.

Hi friends! I run @flightsfromhome on Instagram—where I share my favorite flight deals from Salt Lake City. This photograph (below) is of my little girl and me in Cambodia this year. We went to Cambodia on a whim because I found a great deal on airfare. In fact, that’s how most of our trips begin—with a sale on a flight. That being said, I watch flights, and I can’t book all the flights, so I figure, whateva whateva, share the travel love with you guys. And that leads us to the Instagram page. I’ll find ‘em, you book ‘em … or don’t, and just enjoy the cool airline price posts.

With the holidays coming up, I wanted to tackle some important holiday travel questions, like does the TSA categorize cranberry sauce as a liquid? Yes. Yes they do. And, more importantly, how are you going to get the best deal on your holiday flight? So, here are my five tips for booking holiday flight:

  1. Be Realistic. Holiday flights are generally more expensive—so if you plan to travel over the holidays, don’t expect absolute rock bottom prices. Prices fluctuate year-to-year, so if you paid something last year don’t expect that to be the price you will pay this year—some of you may be pleasantly surprised by prices, others might be disappointed, but hey, it is what it is.
  2. Be Flexible. This goes without saying, but the more flexible you are, the more luck you’ll have on finding a lower fare. Typically, you will find that flights are actually cheaper if you are willing to fly on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, or New Year’s Day. Want to leave the evening before Thanksgiving? So does everyone else. That is why that fare is likely going to be the most expensive. When planning your flights, try leaving the weekdays after the holiday and enjoy some of those leftovers a little longer.
  3. Book Early. Although you may score a deal right before the holiday, often fares just continue to rise as the holiday approaches. So book early. Check flights a few times a week for a couple weeks and when you see the fare drop (or maybe it never drops), it’s probably a good idea to book. I personally like using for this because I think it gives you an overall good idea of the fare prices and its calendar search matrix is really user friendly. If you think you found a great deal in Google Flights, ALWAYS double check this deal at This website pulls a lot of alternative booking agencies that might provide a lower price.
  4. Travel Internationally. While fares to your parents’ house might seem very expensive, international travel is often really cheap. So think about ditching the family and trading in the turkey for a little Pad Thai (sorry Mom and Dad, but Thailand is calling my name) … Just send them a postcard and they will probably understand.
  5. Utilize Airlines’ Cancellation Policies. So you see a fare that you want to book, but you’re not sure if the dates will actually work for your holiday travel? Book the fare then figure out the details. Most airlines (when booking directly with the airline) provide a 24-hour cancellation window to either hold the fare or cancel without penalty. Always double check the airline policy before booking if you think you may cancel and read the fine print, and if you think only one person in your reservation may cancel, book them on a separate reservation because usually you have to cancel the whole reservation (learned this one the hard way once).

Fall fashion Tips

Today we have a fall fashion guest post from Tarah Peacock, fashion blogger from The Styled Peacock .  Check out her favorites for fall and get some great ideas when shopping.  Thanks Tarah!

If you ask me Fall is the best time of year. With it’s cool crisp mornings and warm days, it doesn’t get much better than that, except Fall style! I’ve been loving all of the trends and styles this season.

Some of my favorites are…

The wide brimmed hat! I love the look these hats add to any outfit. With so many styles to choose from you’re sure to find a hat to fit your style and personality.

I’m a big fan of dark colors, I love how versatile this black baby doll top is, I’ve noticed that this style is huge right now, the loose fit and flow is super flattering. And I’m loving the deep colored jeans, especially this deep burgundy jean. These colors are pretty and classic for Fall.

Dark florals are huge for Fall. Who says florals are just a Summer trend? The dark hues I’ve seen around are just beautiful. I love flowers all year round!

Mustard is also a great color choice for Fall. I love the extra little details in this shirt. Colors like rust, mustard, pumpkin orange and burgundy is really popular right now.

Booties! No more trying to find a pair of knee length boots that fit your legs, booties are for everyone. Pair your floral dress with booties, the perfect Fall accessory!

Blanket scarfs are another huge Fall staple this year. There are so many different ways to wear your scarf and they keep you really warm on those chilly nights!

Switching your style can be easy with a few extra pieces. I love this faux leather jacket, it always amps up my style.

Add a long duster to break up the dark hues in your outfit. This was actually my duster from Summer, but you can easily switch it up for Fall.

Happy Autumn everyone!

An Act of Kindness

Today I was thinking of a time when a stranger did something special for our family. I’ll never forget it because it came at a tender time.

We had just left a funeral and we were all hungry but in a hurry to get to the cemetery, we decided to go through a drive-up and get something to hold us over.

There were several cars in front of us, we placed our order and as we pulled up to pay, the clerk told us that the family in front of us had already paid for our food.

We were shocked and filled with gratitude and warm feelings all at the same time, as they drove away all we could see was a couple with a bunch of children in a van. It happened so quickly that we were not able to thank them.

I suspect that gratitude was not what they were looking for, but a chance to do something kind for a stranger and a chance to teach their children about service.

I’ve thought about this kind act many times through the years.

What kind of people do something like that? I’m guessing we weren’t the first and that they must get so much joy from doing this kind of thing.

I also suspect that their children grew up and have fond memories of the acts of kindness that they shared with their parents.

The 13th-century Persian poet, Rumi said:

“Your acts of kindness are iridescent wings of divine love, which linger and continue to uplift others long after your sharing.”

What can you and I do this week for someone special or perhaps a total stranger?

In Love with Anthropologie’s Fall Line

This week we visited one of our favorite stores.  Anthropologie has an array of beautiful fall and winter clothing that was just being displayed as we were there.

Brittany is wearing a crisp, white Tie-Front Button Down blouse.  The Wintertide Poncho Vest is soft and warm and you can wear it just about anywhere.  In the photo below, the Draped Jacquard Duster Poncho is reversible and the only problem is figuring out what side is more beautiful!

See our Instagram post today for our “Friday Introductions” to learn more about Brittany. @SaltSkyUtah

Best Ever Pumpkin Doughnuts

We made pumpkin doughnuts last night for dessert and well, you absolutely have to try them. The best part is that they are super easy!

Click here to get the full recipe. NOTE I made some changes and additions and they were a hit.

-I substituted the cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg for pumpkin spice. (1 1/4 tsp. Pumpkin spice).

-Easiest way to get nice and clean looking doughnuts is to pipe the batter in the baking pan (Check out this pan, it’s my favorite!)

– I topped these doughnuts with a pumpkin spice, cream cheese frosting:

Beat one stick of butter in a mixer, add 8 0z. Cold cream cheese and beat until well combined. Add 1 lb powdered sugar, 1 1/2 tsp pumpkin spice, 1 tablespoon milk, 1 tsp vanilla and mix 2 minutes until creamy and smooth.

-I also topped some of the frosted doughnuts with melted caramel and it was delicious.

Hope you love these as much as we did!  We will definitely be making these for Halloween night.
