Christmas

It’s not too late to call Santa

This week, we had our little boys call Santa on the Santa Hotline. It was pretty sweet. When you call the number, you hear a recording of Santa talking for a little bit and then, after the tone, your child or children can leave him a message telling him what they want this year for Christmas.

My little 3-year-old thought this was the best thing ever. He went on and on telling in detail what Transformer Rescue Bot he wanted, what it looked like, and how it’s supposed to transform. It was fun to listen and he was so happy making the call. The initial call is free and after your child completes the call you receive a text message, if the call was made from a mobile phone, explaining that you can listen to the message anytime within the next 48 hours. I’m not sure if there is a charge to call back the number provided on the text to retrieve the message. Your kids will light up and love leaving a message on Santa’s hotline, you may want to give it a try.

Merry Christmas!

Our Favorite Fall Soup

Nothing says autumn more than Butternut Squash Soup!

This is our favorite recipe and so easy to make. We love baking Crusty Bread to serve with it. Our grandpa who we call “abuelo” grows plenty of butternut squash every year and shares it with the whole family.

Here’s what you’ll need:

One butternut squash, peeled and cubed

One small apple, peeled and cubed

2 TBSP Knorr Caldo de Pollo

Put the above three ingredients in a pot. Cover with water, just enough to barely cover and cook until tender when pricked with a fork.

img_2237 img_2238

In a separate pot:

Melt 1 cube of butter

Add 2 TBSP flour

¾ cup half & half cream

Cook on medium heat until it thickens, mixing constantly.

In a blender:

Blend the cooked squash & apple along with the water it cooked in.

Pour into the cream mixture. Add a little pepper and ½ tsp. of nutmeg.

We like to sprinkle a little nutmeg when serving each bowl too.

Enjoy!

shoes we love

This past weekend I went shopping and of course ended up looking for some amazing shoes I can start wearing in the spring. You can say I have spring fever. I love shoes so much even though it is hard for me to find them in a size 5. Sole Society has incredible shoes and they carry my size! I can’t tell you how happy I am about that.  Here are the latest from Sole Society. I hope you love them as much as I do.

Birthdays

Where would we be without her?

Celebration of our 1st birthday wouldn’t be complete without a special thank you to our mama. She is the mastermind behind our Inspiration posts, the one who reminds us that everything wonderful comes with hard work, and uplifts us when times get hard.

We feel extra lucky to have her a part of this blog and although she hates being photographed, she’s always there through every post, photoshoot & event we are a part of.

Another thank you to our followers and businesses that sponsor our blog. We are grateful that you’re a part of this journey and hope that you love all the surprises that we have in the works for you.

Xoxo,
The Salt Sky Girls 💛

(And yes… In case you were wondering… We did have to ambush mama dearest for this photo. She may or may not be saying “this isn’t going on the blog right?” as it was being taken. 😂 Ha ha, oh mother.)

Tips and tricks to use around the house

I have recently learned of some amazing home tricks and tips. I gathered up some of my favorites and have already started using them in my home.  It’s been 5 years since I moved out of my parent’s home and I wish I would have known about some of these sooner.  Here they are:

To get rid of  food odor in plastic containers

Store your containers with paper towel in them, they will absorb the odors.  No more scrubbing without success.

Separate your bananas

This will keep them from ripening too quickly. I wish I would have learned this year’s ago. It would have saved me from lots of brown bananas. Luckily, old bananas are great for making banana bread!

Are your eggs fresh?

This is incredible. Try this before throwing out your eggs. If you aren’t sure if your eggs are fresh, place them in a glass with water. If they sink they are fresh if they float they are bad.

Lemons, lemons, lemons!

Use lemons to clean the hard water off the shower handle.

Clean your garbage disposal with lemon peels, ice cubes and some salt. It will get rid of that awful smell.

After chopping garlic or onions, remove the smell from your hands by rubbing lemon juice, salt and a little dish soap and rinsing well.

Cloudy honey?

Don’t throw out your cloudy or crystallized honey. It doesn’t mean it’s bad. Throw it in the microwave for 30 seconds to clear it up again.

Vinegar is amazing

Use distilled white vinegar to clear up cloudy glassware.

Put 1/2 cup of distilled white vinegar in your washer to help get the mildew smell out of towels.

Mix one part white vinegar and one part warm water to clean spills in carpet, especially pet stains.

Bay leaves

Put a bay leaf in with your rice, flour sugar or pasta to repel bugs. Amazing!

Brown sugar

Hardened brown sugar? Put it in the microwave for 30 seconds to soften it again.

Ripen fruit

Need to ripen your fruit quickly? I need to with my pears all the time. Put it in a bag with an apple. Apples releases ethylene gas that helps ripen other fruits quickly.

 Laundry spot remover

Mix 1/2 cup hydrogen peroxide 1/2 cup baking soda and 1 cup water. Put it on tough stains. Works wonders.

I hope that these tips will serve you well!

Shiny hair for Fall and Winter
Beauty

Super shiny hair for fall and winter

As the seasons change, so does your hair, it just gets dull. One of my favorite things is going to the salon and having  a clear coat or a high gloss hair treatment applied to my hair. Here are some reasons it’s a must and totally in for fall.

It will help restore that once beautiful shine that the summer sun, chlorine and the environment have damaged.

If your hair is colored it will help lock in the color. It’s also a great option for anyone who doesn’t color their hair. It isn’t harsh like color and won’t change your natural hair. It’s also a great conditioning treatment. If you have frizz, it can help tone that down.

Shiny hair

I recommend having it done professionally, but if you want to do it yourself, John Frieda has a clear shine you can buy at a drug store such as Target. Buy it here.

Clear shine

The benefits go on but I don’t need anymore convincing! Go get it done. I promise you won’t regret the beautiful shine your hair will have. Plus who doesn’t want gorgeous shiny hair?
