Halo Top ice cream, guilt free sweets
Specialty Shops

Guilt Free Ice Cream, yes please!

Eating healthy generally takes away everything we like and two things we can’t live without… sweets and bread.  We tried giving up sweets and that lasted less than 24 hours so we started thinking of smarter sweet choices because life is to be enjoyed, right?

Well it was like angels singing when Halo Top Creamery sent us their fabulous ice cream to try.  Halo Top ice cream is only around 250 calories for the ENTIRE pint!  Halo Top has less fat, less carbs, more protein and less calories than most ice cream out there.  (Click HERE to see how they compare) With all that being said, the taste is still SO amazing.  It’s a guilt free dessert.

Halo Top ice cream, guilt free sweets

Halo Top says:  “We use organic stevia. Stevia is a plant native to Paraguay that’s been used to sweeten foods and beverages for more than 200 years. And, because it’s so tasty, we use it as a sugar replacement. We also use Erythritol, which though it has a rather scientific-sounding name, is actually another all-natural sweetener found in fruits like pears and grapes. Though it’s technically a sugar alcohol, it’s unlike the others because erythritol doesn’t affect blood glucose or cause bloating.”

We highly recommend trying it out for yourself and if you want to try our favorite…eat the strawberry and chocolate together, delicious!  Click HERE to find out where to purchase Halo Top and tell us what you think.

Personal training at DASH fitness

Training with Aubree Busath was a joy!  She had a clear plan for our class, we began with rolling our muscles out with a foam roller, which seemed to feel more like a deep tissue massage! We felt that she warmed us up so well, that we felt completely prepared to begin her carefully designed circuit training.  She watched our form closely, and was sure to let us know if our form was incorrect so we won’t cause any injuries.  Aubree made sure we understood the exercises before we began so we knew exactly what to do. She made us feel comfortable and encouraged us to keep pushing ourselves! We left this class optimistic and feeling fantastic.  We felt like we got a great workout without feeling completely drained.

Aubree is offering all of our followers a special deal… 50% off 12 sessions!  You get 12 individualized sessions for the price of 6. Personal training is usually $720 for 12 sessions but mention SALT SKY when you book and receive them for $390.  This price can be for one person OR get a group of friends and split up the price! There’s no limit to the size of your group so the more people you have, the less you’ll pay.   Pretty exciting. Also when you mention SALT SKY, Aubree will give you a free trial session for new clients so you can see how much you’re going to love it.  These special offers are valid through 2/28/17.

Independence Day, Recipes

Independence Day Fudge

Making Fudge has been a popular pastime in our country since George Washington’s day. It’s much easier to make today and it’s still a great American favorite.

4 squares (ounces) unsweetened baker’s chocolate

1 ¼ cups light cream

3 cups sugar

¼ cup light corn syrup

½ teaspoon salt

¼ cup butter

2 teaspoons vanilla

Walnuts if desired

  1. Combine the chocolate and cream in a saucepan. Stir constantly until the chocolate is completely melted and mixture is smooth.
  2. Add the sugar, syrup and salt, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Continue cooking over medium/high heat until a small amount of the candy dropped into a glass of water forms a soft ball. Remove saucepan from the heat.
  3. Now add the butter and vanilla. Allow mixture to cool (about 15 min.) without stirring it. Then beat it hard until it begins to hold its shape and its glossiness.  Add nuts.
  4. Grease a pan with butter and pour the fudge into it. With a spatula, spread fudge into an even layer. Put into the refrigerator for several hours and then cut into squares. Yield 36 pieces.

Pre and Post-workout smoothies that will keep you moving!
Health & Fitness, Recipes

Pre & Post workout Smoothie

Pre-workout smoothies are all about having carbs for fast energy, proteins to help your muscles get ready, and good fats to prepare your body for a workout.  The great thing about having a smoothie before you exercise, is so your body can process the nutrients faster because it doesn’t have to break down the smoothie very much.  This = fast energy! Consume 30-40 minutes before you exercise.

If you are like me and prefer just fruit and veggies in your smoothie, you can get your carbs by having a slice of wheat toast to go along with your smoothie.

The Green Smoothie

2 cups spinach

2 cups almond milk

1 large apple, cored

1 banana

1/3 cup rolled oats

1 TBS coconut oil

1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

Directions: Bend it all together.

Mango & Coconut Water Smoothie

1 cup coconut water ice cubes

1/2 fresh mangos

1/4 cup orange juice

1/4 cup coconut water (coconut milk is also yummy)

Directions: Blend together.

Click Here to see more from this blog!

Post-workout smoothies are meant to repair and build muscle.  So you will want to add more protein here and less carbs.  The protein is the key ingredient, so your workouts can be more beneficial.  Try to have these within 30 minutes of your workout for maximum absorption.

Peanut Butter Smoothie

3 TBS peanut butter

1 frozen banana

3/4 cup milk

1/3 cup vanilla greek yogurt

1 scoop Chocolate protein powder

Directions: Blend it together.  If it is too thick add more milk.

Came up with this one myself hope you like it…

Chocolate Raspberry Almond Butter Protein Shake

2 cup chocolate almond milk

1 scoop chocolate protein powder

3/4 cup frozen raspberries

1/2 of a frozen banana

1 spoonful of almond butter

Directions: Blend it!

magnolias (1)

let the christmas decorating begin

Every year, we bring out the Christmas decor the day after Thanksgiving.  This year we may have done it a little earlier.  We were just too excited.

Decorating for Christmas brings joy to the family and all who visit.  Here are some pieces we used this year and where to get them.

garlandjpegPre-lit garlands are wonderful because not much needs to be done to them.  We added a few magnolia picks.  Available at Modern Display.

stockings This year instead of hanging the stockings from the mantel, we hung them on the stair railing.

You can’t go wrong with silver glitter.  This garland and votive candle holders are simple and fun.

We couldn’t pass up these penguins when we found them at New Orientation, one of our favorite stores located at Foothill Village in Salt Lake.

Pillows from Home Goods add a little color and charm.

chileannativity This handcrafted nativity was brought all the way from Chile and we LOVE it.

This piece is from Pottery Barn.  Add a few single bells to a tray just for fun.

If you have children, pick up an unbreakable nativity.  This one came from Kneaders.  The children around our home love to rearrange the pieces, they lost Mary right away and after searching high and low we finally found her.

Battery operated candles are wonderful.  A little pricy but they last forever, we love using them everywhere in the house.  Fresh potted topiaries and poinsettias are a must.  For a huge selection visit J & J Nursery in Layton.

More ideas coming soon.  Happy decorating!

How to enjoy winter weather.

How to enjoy winter weather

I recently read an article by Laura Vanderkam about seasonal depression and how to avoid it.  It is difficult to arrive to work before the sun comes up and get home as the sun is going down, in addition to that it’s freezing outside.  You feel like your entire day is over.

But there is a light at the end of the tunnel and it is possible to be just as happy in winter as it is in the summertime. Kari Leibowitz, a PhD student at Stanford researched this topic, she traveled to the most northern city in Norway called Tromso.  She was there late November to late January when the sun doesn’t rise above the horizon. Leibowitz was there to study the mental health of the residents living there.  Leibowitz was amazed that seasonal depression was almost nonexistent.  When she asked the people, “Why don’t you have seasonal depression?” The answer was, “Why would we?”

The people actually looked forward to winter! It was a time to be enjoyed, not to be endured.  They indulged themselves in winter activities, it was said that spending time outside was a mood booster.  Skiing is an activity that most everyone loves and do often during the winter. They continue to go outside for any activity or event that is happening.  There is a saying, “There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.” The cold is not about to keep a Norwegian indoors.  Nothing is going to stop them from enjoying life. The community has very strong social ties and relationships, they attend social events and festivals.  When they aren’t outside enjoying activities, they cherish their time indoors by lighting candles and wrapping themselves up in a cozy blanket sipping tea and spending time with loved ones.

We may not have the exact festivals and events as the Norwegians do but, there is still a lot of enjoyable things to do in the community.

Plan activities throughout this winter season that will bring joy to you and your family.  Host a get together with friends, maybe even a candlelight evening and provide everyone with a fluffy blanket!  Go outside often to ski, sled, walk, ice skate, attend church or neighborhood activities, bake a cake, learn something new, or serve in the community.

By changing our mindset from “I hate winter” to “Winter is the bomb” you can begin to eliminate seasonal depression, and before you know it, winter has become your favorite season!
