Visit Bandits Grill and Bar Park City

Who needs a getaway type of date night this week?  I most defiantly do!  This week we are sharing one of our favorites with you, Bandits Bar & Grill on Main Street in Park City, Utah.  Why visit?

IMG_2343 Bandits Park City

  • Bandits Grill & Bar has delicious food that totally gives you a Utah experience.
  • Portions are HUGE and priced so well that you’ll be coming back over and over.
  • Wild Salmon Salad… I don’t think there’s anymore to say there other than… it’s perfection.  Alright, my husband would say he enjoyed it as well, however his mouth watering meal of choice is the 3 meat combo.  It’s incredible.  For the perfect experience, I’m going to say, get both and share.  Trust me.
  • While we’re on the food favorites subject… Their brownie dessert is pretty much heaven and also huge.  You say you don’t have room for dessert?  Well this is worth it, just share and then take an extra long walk around Park City after to make up for it 😉
  • Main Street Park City is my favorite place for date night.  The shops are beautiful, the scenery is breath taking and it always makes me feel like I’m on a mini vacation.  (If I could pick anywhere to live, it would be Park City.)

Time to get away to Capitol Reef

A little piece of heaven is waiting and it’s just 3 hours away from Salt Lake.

Last week we visited wonderful Capitol Reef, took the scenic highway with it’s stunning vistas, hiked to marvelous destinations and relaxed at Capitol Reef Resort in their beautiful and super comfortable rooms.

Capitol Reef, Utah

Did you know you can even stay in a teepee complete with king size bed, flat screen TV, sitting area, and full a private bathroom just a few feet away? We stayed in a comfortable and well decorated room but next time we go it will be a teepee!

A delicious pioneer breakfast buffet is included if you choose that option and the service was great.

Capitol Reef, Utah

For dinner we visited Café Diablo, I highly recommend it. The food was so incredibly delicious that you have to make sure you experience it. Café Diablo is under the ownership of a friendly former cowboy from Philadelphia who loved Utah so much he made it his home. He greeted us dressed in shirt and tie, made excellent recommendations, took our order and served us our wonderful meals. This unique restaurant even grows it’s own organic greens, everything is fresh and tastes out of this world.

Make sure you try the avocado chips, deep fried avocado that has been breaded and cooked to perfection.  The dip is a cheese sauce that perfectly compliments the avocado.

Take a moment to see the local art that hangs throughout the cafe. I loved this hand carved wood piece.

Don’t forget to visit the little town of Fruita nearby, it’s charming and full of history.

Capitol Reef, Utah

As we drove in, we were greeted by a heard of deer, a flock of wild turkey and the friendliest of people. Stop by the visitor center for a short video presentation, walk through the fruit orchards and pick some fruit to take home. We were there too early in the season but the trees were blossoming and it was beautiful.

The little country store sells really yummy ice cream that we had to try, as well as gifts and souvenirs. Make sure you stop by the barn across the street to pet the horses and drive to the original one room school house, peek inside, it’s sweet.

On that same road just a skip away you can see petroglyphs left by the Fremont culture, which existed in areas of Utah from approximately AD 600 to 1300.

You KNEAD a Kneaders pastry

This past week we had the opportunity to take a pastry class from none other than Monica Kate, executive head pastry chef for Kneaders Bakery & Cafe.

We met up with some of our blogger friends and had a super fun group there as we attempted to learn to make delicious puff pastry.  The best part is that they have allowed us to share their own recipe with all of our Salt Sky friends!

Kneaders-7

Here are some fun facts about Kneaders and why we love them:

Kneaders is celebrating 20 years in business; they started with a small store in Orem and have grown to 57 stores in 6 states.

They are a “from scratch bakery” and make 42 different types of pastries daily by starting as early as 4:00 am.

Their kitchen’s high sanitation standards are impressive, everything is sanitized every 2 hours!

When we were there, the bread chef had 400 pounds of dough rising.  Some days they make up to 1000 pounds.  You better believe that they sell out of their delicious bread daily.

We love that this very successful business was started by a husband and wife team with a dream.

HAPPY 20TH BIRTHDAY TO ALL OUR FRIENDS AT KNEADERS!

Visit them today and you will see for yourself why they are so unique and create such wonderful food.

PATE A CHOUX (pronounced Pat a Shoe)

Kneaders Puff Pastry recipe

Ingredients:

1 cup water

1 cup milk

1 cup butter

1 tsp. sugar

1 tsp. salt

1 ¼ cup flour

10 eggs whisked

Directions:

  1. Bring water, milk, butter, sugar, and salt to a boil.
  2. Whisk in flour and once incorporated stir with a spatula for 1-2 minutes.
  3. Pour mixture into a mixer fitted with the paddle attachment and add the whisked eggs gradually. You may not use all the eggs. Pull the paddle out and if the batter makes a “v” you are ready.
  4. Pipe onto a parchment lined sheet tray.
  5. Bake at 345 degrees for about 20-30 minutes, opening the oven (for about 10 seconds) to let out excess steam after you see the product rise and start to sweat.
  6. After pastry had cooled, cut in half. The center should be hallow.
  7. Fill with whipped cream or lemon curd.

You may also dip or drizzle with chocolate ganache.

Basic Ganache recipe

Chocolate 300g

Cream 300g

Directions:

  1. Heat the chocolate in a microwave safe bowl until it is about half melted.
  2. Heat the cream on the stove until it just comes to a boil.
  3. Pour the hot cream over the chocolate and allow to sit for a moment.
  4. Whisk cream until chocolate and cream are fully emulsified and glossy.

Happy baking!

Foodie Heaven in Holladay

Until about a year ago, there simply were not many places to eat in Holladay.  Now you can find just about anything!

Here are some of our favorite places to eat within a block radius in the heart of Holladay:

Tony Burgers- Famous for their out-of-this-world burger.  If you haven’t tried them you must, and you’ll see what we mean.  Also great salads and shakes.

Taqueria 27- Fresh Mexican food with serious creativity.

The Copper Kitchen- For a fancier feel but great anytime and for any occasion.  Wonderful dishes.

Tony Capputos- Love their sandwiches, pasta, soup, salads and sometimes they have the best chocolate cake in the world. I also love their market for unique imported foods. Not to mention the atmosphere, patio sitting and live music on the weekends.

3 Cups- Our favorite place for breakfast. A must try is the homemade steel cut oatmeal.

Rice Basil- Quickly became one of our very favorite Asian restaurants.  Incredible sushi!

Meier Chicken- Best chicken in town.  I recently discovered their chicken fingers that come with homemade ranch dipping dressing.  So yummy we get it weekly for dinner especially on nights I don’t feel like cooking.

SOHO- The very busy food truck destination.  This place is a hit for all kinds of food and a place to socialize for the locals.

Lettuce & Laddles– I love the takeout soups and the vegetable sandwich for lunch.

Sharon’s Cafe- Feels like you stepped back in time.  Friendly service and delicious breakfasts.

Come support these wonderful restaurants soon.  Take a walk around the shops and don’t miss the majestic view of Mt. Olympus at sunset.

GR is the first original venture by brothers, George and Chris Tsoutsounakis. Also run by the Tsoutsounakis family is Astro Burgers. George and Chris’ father opened this first location in 1982 after immigrating to the U.S. from Crete, Greece several years earlier. Having grown up in the restaurant business, and following Chris’ completion of culinary school, the brothers were anxious to start a new concept that could offer people the best of Greek flavors in a fresh, modern way.

GR is a family start-up in every sense. Together with George’s wife, Elpitha, and Chris’ fiancé Cassi Georgelas, the family has spent hours pouring over every detail.

One of our new favorite places that recently opened is The Protein Foundry in Cottonwood Heights.  We were so excited and made sure we were one of the first ones there on opening day.

Owners Jared Brockman and Lorin Warner saw a need for a health food restaurant and created The Protein Foundry that has quickly become a loved place that customers drive from all over to visit.  Some people even visit daily… it’s like the health person’s daily Starbucks.

The Protein Foundry is a restaurant offering healthy food consisting of natural fruits, vegetables and protein. Their menu contains Gourmet Shakeouts, Acai Bowls, Greek Yogurt Bowls and Gourmet Toast.

Protein Foundry, Salt Sky review

Here’s why we love them and think you will too:

  • Shakeouts are delicious shakes in lots of flavors and contain a giant protien scoop.  You don’t like protein shakes?  You’ll fall in love with this new take on a protein shake… all the stuff that’s good for you with an incredible taste.
  • Acai Bowls are a fan favorite.  Owner, Lorin Warner learned about acai and the nutritional value while living in Brazil.  These are a must.
  • My personal favorite, Greek Yogurt Bowls and Peanut Butter Banana Monkey Bread.  Seriously, let me just say DELISH!
  • You won’t find any crazy extra ingredients in the food, just natural, giving you energy and feeling great.

Plates & Palates- a must try

Located: 390 North 500 West
Bountiful, Utah
Phone: 801-292-2425

This week we visited Plates & Palates in Bountiful for an incredible lunch we won’t forget. We have to share them with you today, it was that good! Plates & Palates has been open for 12 years and loved by everyone that visits.  People line up at lunch time to eat there and we learned quickly why; the menu is to die for!

PLATES&PALATES

We ate a Pear Pecan Salad with crispy bacon and pecans that tasted like candy… they were incredible.  We also ate a Mediterranean Panini full of artichoke hearts, feta, roasted bell peppers, salami & provolone (is your mouth watering yet?).  If that wasn’t enough we finished with their famous Coconut Cake that is both heavenly and addicting, we won’t get through the weekend without heading back for more.   (Well, we may have eaten a few more desserts and they were delicious) Like their very original Wild Rice Pudding with fresh mangos and crushed pistachios, this one was a hit!  And the Salted Caramel Chocolate Cheesecake finished our lunch with a touch of perfection.

DSC_0057

If you live in Salt Lake, it is definitely worth the drive just to try the coconut cake, no… the salted caramel chocolate cheesecake, no… the pear pecan salad, no… the rice pudding (which is a Plates & Palates original)… ok, let’s just say it’s worth the drive.  I promise you won’t be disappointed, in fact, it will probably become your go to date night or lunch spot.

Everyone is hooked on Straws these days.  When I went to get a little something with the family, there was a steady stream of traffic the entire time I was there. I ordered the Samoa shake, Raspberry Vanilla Italian Soda, a fruit smoothie and some seriously amazing sugar cookies.

Straws, local review found on Saltsky.com, your drink destination!

Straws opened 2 years ago by owner Tina Koch and her family. She thought it would be a great way for the family to spend time together doing something they love. Straws is your drink destination, they serve delicious drinks, smoothies, ice cream, shakes, tropical snow, Dole Whips, cookies (baked homemade daily), cake bites dipped in milk chocolate and soft pretzels. They value customer service and have created friends with their customers. Straws uses the highest quality ingredients including fruit boba’s that add the best flavors to their smoothies and shaved ice. They are also the only local shop to serve shaved ice year round, which is made just like the ones in Hawaii.  They do this by adding cream or ice cream along with one or more of their 26 flavors to the shaved ice.  They even offer a “sipper cup” that is awesome.

Straws, local review found on Saltsky.com, your drink destination!

Straws, local review found on Saltsky.com, your drink destination!

Here’s how Straws works: pull up and someone comes up to your car to take the order, choose one of their signature blends or add anything to your liking. Add a little coconut to your soda, cookies to your shake, frosting or maple bacon to your soft pretzel… pay, pull around the building and your order is ready for pick up at the window. So when the kids are screaming and you need a little quiet time to yourself, or maybe on the way to shopping with friends, on a date night, or just because… any time seems like a great time to make a quick stop at Straws.  They will even cater your special event.

DSC_0061

Another thing I just love about Straws is that they serve fruit and veggie smoothies that are 100% natural, no additives and a 12 oz smoothie is only 160 calories. So, if you’re watching your figure or need a little boost after the gym, it’s the perfect treat. Try the Peach/Pear/Apricot Smoothie, you’ll be hooked instantly and owner, Tina Koch, suggests to add a little pineapple, yum!

An added little bonus to Straws is their frequent drink punch cards where you get one free when you fill it up.  You can also buy their pre-paid drink card. Just buy a card of 10 drinks, show the card when you stop by and you don’t even have to pull out your wallet.  When you use it, just add to it again.   It makes a pretty nice gift card too.
