Cool new crafting tools!

We love finding creative Utah companies and recently we were introduced to Pen Blade.

New cool crafting knives for all sorts of projects. We’ve cut out crepe paper for flowers, fondant, paper initials and name cards. What’s cool about PenBlade is that they have different small knives that make cutting details a lot easier than using scissors.

We made this fun paper rose chandelier to change out during the holidays.  During October, we added some sugar skulls and next month we’ll add some leaves for Thanksgiving.

Processed with VSCO with c1 preset

PenBlade is also selling 5 knives for only $10 this month so we thought we’d share!  Check out the uses for these fun tools below and let us know what you think!  To see the sale, click HERE.

It’s Salsa time!

There’s nothing better than canning salsa on a rainy day and today was just that day.  This past weekend we picked baskets of fresh, organic and beautiful tomatoes from our grandfather’s farm along with peppers of all kinds.  The rest of the ingredients were purchased at Sprouts, our favorite organic produce store.

So send out a text inviting family and friends to join you, roll up those sleeves, put on an apron, and can some salsa you’ll enjoy all year.

While you are at it, double the recipe and share a jar or two with someone that needs a little love!

Salsa recipe

Salsa Restaurant Style and so yummy!

Ingredients:

10 cups peeled, chopped and drained tomatoes (drop whole tomato in boiling water for 30 seconds and the peel will come right off)

3 cups chopped onions

2 cups chopped bell peppers, green, red and yellow

5 jalapenos, chopped fine (no seeds unless you like it spicy)

8 cloves garlic, minced

3 tsp. ground cumin (we love cumin so we put in heaping teaspoons)

3 tsp. black pepper

3 tsp. coarse Kosher salt

½ cup chopped cilantro

½ cup sugar

1 ¼ cup apple cider vinegar

1 can tomato sauce (16 oz)

1 can tomato paste (12 oz)

Salsa recipe

Directions:

Combine all ingredients in a pot and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 15 minutes while stirring.

Fill the clean pint size jars with the salsa, leaving ½ inch space at the top.

Wipe the rim of the glass jar with a damp cloth.

Boil the lids for a couple of minutes and seal jars with lid and ring.

Process in a water bath canner for 25-30 minutes. This time is for high altitudes of 3000 ft to 6000 ft.

After removing the jars from water bath, allow them to cool on the counter while they completely seal as they cool. If a jar does not seal properly, just put in in the refrigerator to enjoy during the week.

Recipe will make 12 pint size jars.

5 splash pads for summer!
For Kicks & Giggles

5 splash pads to visit this summer

Summer vacation is here and with that comes some fun activities and a whole summer to play with the kids. We love summer vacation and we’re going to have lots of great ideas for you on the blog this season to keep the whole family entertained starting with 5 awesome splash pads that the kids will love.

IMG_1641

Wardle Fields splash pad & Playground
This new splash pad is HUGE!  It’s full of water features, streams to play in and a full playground complete with zip lines.  There isn’t much shade so take a shade structure, treats, water and plenty of sunscreen.  Earlier is better for the crowds.  It is so fun and you’ll love it.

14148 South 2700 West, Bluffdale, UT

This is the place

This is the Place
This splash pad opened a couple of years ago and it is awesome. The water flows out of a big wall and shoots up all over the pad. We can’t ever pull the kids away from this one. I also like that there are steps on 2 sides of the splash pad to hang out and watch the kids under the trees.

city creek

City Creek Center
City Creek is a great place for mom and dad to shop and eat with a promise to the kids that they get to play in the splash pad at the end. Works like a charm! the splash pad at City Creek is small but I’ve never been there when it’s so busy that the kids can’t play. It’s located by the fountains. Shoes are mandatory at this splash pad and security will definitely remind you, so make sure you come with water shoes or flip flops that stay on tiny feet.

mountainview park

Mountainview Park
Mountainview Park is located in Cottonwood Heights 1651 Fort Union Blvd. This splash pad is huge and so fun but it is generally very busy. I’ve had my best luck going in the morning or evening with the family. It seems like around lunch time you’ll be there with the rest of the state but it’s such a fun place, the kids will want to come back to over and over again.

gateway

Gateway
Downtown Salt Lake City at The Gateway is a big splash pad. It’s located at the north end of Gateway. It’s pretty and surrounded by red stone. There are lots of places for you to sit and watch the kids and they often have activities for kids to do and music playing. It’s a great one to try.

Grab some sunscreen, cute water shoes and get out and play! What is your favorite splash pad in Utah? Tag us in your next splash pad play date on instagram, we may just feature your favorites right here!

Have fun and enjoy the summer!

A Room Reveal

A Christmas plaid wallpaper room and bathroom was screaming for a room makeover.  I wish I hadn’t avoided tearing down that wallpaper for the last 3 years because it came off so much easier than I thought it would.  Now this room feels like a breath of fresh air.

Here are all the details for this room makeover for a very special 10 year old.

room reveal1

DIF wallpaper spray stripper is only $7 and did an entire room, closets and bathroom.  Just mix with very hot water, spray onto the wallpaper, let sit a minute and start to peel off the wall.  This only took a couple of hours to do and worked beautifully.  We bought ours at Wallpaper Warehouse in Sandy, Utah.

DIF wallpaper

After removing the wall paper we did the drywall patching and sanding.

I wanted this basement to feel bright and open so I found a paint that I absolutely love, BEHR paint and primer, Silent White (from Home Depot).  It looks white but dries in the prettiest light gray.  The bedroom and bathroom feel so much brighter and bigger.

Time to get away to Capitol Reef

A little piece of heaven is waiting and it’s just 3 hours away from Salt Lake.

Last week we visited wonderful Capitol Reef, took the scenic highway with it’s stunning vistas, hiked to marvelous destinations and relaxed at Capitol Reef Resort in their beautiful and super comfortable rooms.

Capitol Reef, Utah

Did you know you can even stay in a teepee complete with king size bed, flat screen TV, sitting area, and full a private bathroom just a few feet away? We stayed in a comfortable and well decorated room but next time we go it will be a teepee!

A delicious pioneer breakfast buffet is included if you choose that option and the service was great.

Capitol Reef, Utah

For dinner we visited Café Diablo, I highly recommend it. The food was so incredibly delicious that you have to make sure you experience it. Café Diablo is under the ownership of a friendly former cowboy from Philadelphia who loved Utah so much he made it his home. He greeted us dressed in shirt and tie, made excellent recommendations, took our order and served us our wonderful meals. This unique restaurant even grows it’s own organic greens, everything is fresh and tastes out of this world.

Make sure you try the avocado chips, deep fried avocado that has been breaded and cooked to perfection.  The dip is a cheese sauce that perfectly compliments the avocado.

Take a moment to see the local art that hangs throughout the cafe. I loved this hand carved wood piece.

Don’t forget to visit the little town of Fruita nearby, it’s charming and full of history.

Capitol Reef, Utah

As we drove in, we were greeted by a heard of deer, a flock of wild turkey and the friendliest of people. Stop by the visitor center for a short video presentation, walk through the fruit orchards and pick some fruit to take home. We were there too early in the season but the trees were blossoming and it was beautiful.

The little country store sells really yummy ice cream that we had to try, as well as gifts and souvenirs. Make sure you stop by the barn across the street to pet the horses and drive to the original one room school house, peek inside, it’s sweet.

On that same road just a skip away you can see petroglyphs left by the Fremont culture, which existed in areas of Utah from approximately AD 600 to 1300.

You KNEAD a Kneaders pastry

This past week we had the opportunity to take a pastry class from none other than Monica Kate, executive head pastry chef for Kneaders Bakery & Cafe.

We met up with some of our blogger friends and had a super fun group there as we attempted to learn to make delicious puff pastry.  The best part is that they have allowed us to share their own recipe with all of our Salt Sky friends!

Kneaders-7

Here are some fun facts about Kneaders and why we love them:

Kneaders is celebrating 20 years in business; they started with a small store in Orem and have grown to 57 stores in 6 states.

They are a “from scratch bakery” and make 42 different types of pastries daily by starting as early as 4:00 am.

Their kitchen’s high sanitation standards are impressive, everything is sanitized every 2 hours!

When we were there, the bread chef had 400 pounds of dough rising.  Some days they make up to 1000 pounds.  You better believe that they sell out of their delicious bread daily.

We love that this very successful business was started by a husband and wife team with a dream.

HAPPY 20TH BIRTHDAY TO ALL OUR FRIENDS AT KNEADERS!

Visit them today and you will see for yourself why they are so unique and create such wonderful food.

PATE A CHOUX (pronounced Pat a Shoe)

Kneaders Puff Pastry recipe

Ingredients:

1 cup water

1 cup milk

1 cup butter

1 tsp. sugar

1 tsp. salt

1 ¼ cup flour

10 eggs whisked

Directions:

  1. Bring water, milk, butter, sugar, and salt to a boil.
  2. Whisk in flour and once incorporated stir with a spatula for 1-2 minutes.
  3. Pour mixture into a mixer fitted with the paddle attachment and add the whisked eggs gradually. You may not use all the eggs. Pull the paddle out and if the batter makes a “v” you are ready.
  4. Pipe onto a parchment lined sheet tray.
  5. Bake at 345 degrees for about 20-30 minutes, opening the oven (for about 10 seconds) to let out excess steam after you see the product rise and start to sweat.
  6. After pastry had cooled, cut in half. The center should be hallow.
  7. Fill with whipped cream or lemon curd.

You may also dip or drizzle with chocolate ganache.

Basic Ganache recipe

Chocolate 300g

Cream 300g

Directions:

  1. Heat the chocolate in a microwave safe bowl until it is about half melted.
  2. Heat the cream on the stove until it just comes to a boil.
  3. Pour the hot cream over the chocolate and allow to sit for a moment.
  4. Whisk cream until chocolate and cream are fully emulsified and glossy.

Happy baking!

Think Outside, No Box Required

When springtime warms the air and our thoughts turn to planting, it’s time to dig in the dirt. For starters I purchased some fragrant lavender topiaries for my front porch, I have to smell them every time I walk by.

I also found some great garden accessories that are sure to beckon you outside!

Best part, they are shipped right to your door.

gardening set

The Vremi 9 piece Garden Tool Set includes everything you need to get started.

cernova

A favorite, the Crenova Spray Nozzle makes watering your flower pots easy and fun.

gorilla cart

The Gorilla Cart makes any job in the garden easier.  Great gift for dad too!

garden set with stool

For some serious comfort while weeding or planting, how about the GardenHome 7 piece Garden Tool Set which includes a stool!

splitter

And my all time favorite.  The two-way hose connector splitter.  I love it because I can have a short hose for the pots on my porch and a long hose for the front lawn flower beds.  That way I don’t have to roll up the long hose every time I water.

Happy planting to all.  May your flowers bloom to perfection and your vegetables taste ever so yummy!

Improve your photography and photo editing skills

We’ve been working on taking better photos lately and took an online course that has helped so much.  There are a ton of courses out there that teach you about photography, but we were looking for the extra simple, start from the beginning course.  We didn’t need a “turn into a professional photography overnight” course but one to teach us to better use the camera we have.

We wanted to share this course with you because it really is simple, broken up into small segments so you can learn one concept at a time, practice and then move on.  Plus you’ll have the course to review over and over again until you feel like you know it since it’s online.

Since spring is coming and the scenery is breath taking, it’s a great time to get comfortable with your camera.  Are you looking for a new camera?  This is the one we bought and it just went on sale for $200 OFF!  Dang, we should have waited, ha ha.  Click here to check it out.  We LOVE this camera and works great with the course as well.

The course is $129 BUT our followers can get it for $49 now until 2/26/17. Click here to sign up for the online course and tell us what you think!
