5 splash pads to visit this summer

Summer vacation is here and with that comes some fun activities and a whole summer to play with the kids. We love summer vacation and we’re going to have lots of great ideas for you on the blog this season to keep the whole family entertained starting with 5 awesome splash pads that the kids will love.

Wardle Fields splash pad & Playground
This new splash pad is HUGE!  It’s full of water features, streams to play in and a full playground complete with zip lines.  There isn’t much shade so take a shade structure, treats, water and plenty of sunscreen.  Earlier is better for the crowds.  It is so fun and you’ll love it.

14148 South 2700 West, Bluffdale, UT

This is the place

This is the Place
This splash pad opened a couple of years ago and it is awesome. The water flows out of a big wall and shoots up all over the pad. We can’t ever pull the kids away from this one. I also like that there are steps on 2 sides of the splash pad to hang out and watch the kids under the trees.

city creek

City Creek Center
City Creek is a great place for mom and dad to shop and eat with a promise to the kids that they get to play in the splash pad at the end. Works like a charm! the splash pad at City Creek is small but I’ve never been there when it’s so busy that the kids can’t play. It’s located by the fountains. Shoes are mandatory at this splash pad and security will definitely remind you, so make sure you come with water shoes or flip flops that stay on tiny feet.

mountainview park

Mountainview Park
Mountainview Park is located in Cottonwood Heights 1651 Fort Union Blvd. This splash pad is huge and so fun but it is generally very busy. I’ve had my best luck going in the morning or evening with the family. It seems like around lunch time you’ll be there with the rest of the state but it’s such a fun place, the kids will want to come back to over and over again.

Downtown Salt Lake City at The Gateway is a big splash pad. It’s located at the north end of Gateway. It’s pretty and surrounded by red stone. There are lots of places for you to sit and watch the kids and they often have activities for kids to do and music playing. It’s a great one to try.

Grab some sunscreen, cute water shoes and get out and play! What is your favorite splash pad in Utah? Tag us in your next splash pad play date on instagram, we may just feature your favorites right here!

Have fun and enjoy the summer!

Improve your photography and photo editing skills

We’ve been working on taking better photos lately and took an online course that has helped so much.  There are a ton of courses out there that teach you about photography, but we were looking for the extra simple, start from the beginning course.  We didn’t need a “turn into a professional photography overnight” course but one to teach us to better use the camera we have.

We wanted to share this course with you because it really is simple, broken up into small segments so you can learn one concept at a time, practice and then move on.  Plus you’ll have the course to review over and over again until you feel like you know it since it’s online.

Since spring is coming and the scenery is breath taking, it’s a great time to get comfortable with your camera.  Are you looking for a new camera?  This is the one we bought and it just went on sale for $200 OFF!  Dang, we should have waited, ha ha.  Click here to check it out.  We LOVE this camera and works great with the course as well.

The course is $129 BUT our followers can get it for $49 now until 2/26/17. Click here to sign up for the online course and tell us what you think!

This course includes:

Tips for the budgeting mama

Today we have a guest post.  Tracey Clayton is a full time mom of three girls. She feels she knows a thing or two about raising happy, healthy and confident kids, and offers helpful advice in her parenting articles. Her motto is: “Live the life you love, love the life you live.”

“All moms out there are magic workers like no other; in fact, if there was a company storing all moms’ little tricks and hacks that keep the kids happy, the husband jumping for joy and the family budget just where it should be (maintained), it would be one heck of a successful company, be sure of that!

Pinch a little here, add a little there and all gets sorted in a blink of an eye – the homework is done, the house is spotless, she’s been to work, nailed it, and came back, she’s managed to get to her oldest kid’s school night and to her youngest one’s soccer game… she’s even squeezed in a coffee with her best friend and shopping with her mother-in-law. And how does she do it every single time? Well, she regularly washes her face with fairy dust and drinks Tooth Ferries’ wisdom, what can we say.
When it comes to maintaining the family budget, not every mom does things the same way (obviously, things depend on the family situation) but there are some common threads that all of us could benefit adapting.
Here’s, a breakdown of mom tricks to follow for a healthy budget this fall.”

magic budgeting tips
She understands money
Every mom who is in charge of the family budget keeps a close eye to the inflow of money; that way, at any given moment, she knows what goes where and how much money the family can spend on certain things – whether it’s something small and seemingly insignificant, like shopping for groceries or planning out the family’s next holiday. Naturally without the support of her husband, things would be frugal, so she always looks to first build healthy family communication and then work on figuring out the money they have together.
She likes thrift shops
The fact this mom likes her thrift shops doesn’t mean she isn’t fashionable; if anything, she’s progressed so much in her fashion sense that she can find the most fabulous outfits browsing through piles of seemingly unattractive stuff. Further, by mostly buying in thrift shops, she is teaching her kids to not only save money but be conscious about the environment and fast fashion. Talk about killing two birds with one stone, right?
We hear thrift shopping isn’t reduced to store-shopping only; smart moms love to do their shopping right but save time in the process as much as possible – with clothing sites like they definitely manage to do both!

She is ahead of house mishaps
What rarely anyone thinks about before the damage happens is to fix things around the house that may be a potential cause of money waste. Yes, we are talking heat leaks, broken plumbing, overused heaters, etc.
Moms who are on top of the family budget make sure all potential leaks are sealed (doors, windows, ceiling cracks, etc) before they’ve made a considerable hole in the budget… we are all familiar with the sour taste of a cold home and a huge electric bill!
Also, when it comes to heating specifically, she’ll say “no” to space heaters and opt for central heating systems, especially in cold climates. Why? She knows these are more efficient than individual space heaters as they convert only about 30% of fuel energy into electricity. And guess what? The space will never need supplemental heat, as the mom of this house has already made sure all rooms are insulated and cracks and leaks sealed. Smart!

She recycles and reuses
When the budget is thin (or you just want to save up), reusing comes as a perfect way to leave some money aside. On top of that, it’s a fabulous way for the kids and moms to bond through DIY work around the house and channel their inner creative divas. Using an old bed cover to fashion pillow cases, mom’s old dress to craft decorative lace for plant pots, replacing boring pics with new, exciting ones in the existing, cute frames (instead of buying new sets), etc. are all perfect ways to save up, and every smart mom will encourage her kids to try it. Awesome, right?
We hope the advice above helped. Good luck with your budget-adventure!

Bout: a must try new app

We are loving a new app called Bout.  Bout is an app that shows you 2 photos at a time and asks you to vote on them in categories like fashion, design, food & travel.  Once you vote for your favorite of the two, you see how your vote compared with other voters on the same photos.

You can create your own Bouts for people to vote on and follow your favorite accounts.  Plus, the corner of every photo has an info icon that you can click on to get recipes, where to buy a fabulous outfit, travel info and more.  Look for our Bouts and click here to download the app.

Try it out and tell us what you think!  Be the first to have this app that people are going nuts over.  Happy voting!

Growing your organic summer veggies

It’s not too late to start growing some organic vegetables in pots. I am loving that my pots are just outside the back door on my deck.

I planted zucchini, yellow squash, two kinds of tomatoes and some of my favorite herbs for cooking.

The grandkids love to come over everyday and water the pots. It’s so fun to see how excited they get and I can’t wait until we can cook together something delicious that they helped to harvest.

It’s so easy to get a garden going in pots. And you don’t even need to go to the store and break your back lifting the heavy bags of soil. Simply order your potting soil for organic gardening right here. I like using Espoma because it’s all natural and no pesticides have been added.

Here are some other helpful things to have on hand.

Tomato & Plant support cage.  This is a must have for supporting your plants, they get huge fast.

Gardman 8330 Galvanized Watering Can with Copper Accents, 1.9 Gallon. I love this charming watering can.

Dr. Earth Organic 5 Tomato, Vegetable & Herb Fertilizer Poly Bag.  For healthy plants and big juicy vegetables!

Happy planting, growing, harvesting and cooking!

Happy Spring Salt Sky friends!

we’re celebrating earth day

This month, in celebration of Earth Day and Arbor Day we are planting a tree.

This family activity was the perfect time to talk about reasons why planting a tree is important.

We chose an apricot tree because it will give us fruit for our favorite jam. Not to mention the fun the kids will get from picking the fruit and helping with the canning.

Dan Lambe, president of the Arbor Day Foundation recently said:

“Trees are a solution to many of the global issues we face today, improving air quality and water quality and helping mitigate climate change, deforestation, poverty and hunger.”

Join us this month in planting a tree to celebrate this beautiful place we call EARTH.
